Secret Agent is a platform game that was developed and published by Apogee in three episodes in 1992. The game uses the same engine as its predecessor, Crystal Caves . It was launched on February 1, 1992.

The first episode is free ( shareware ), while the other two are paid and sold to this day. All three episodes have an identical gameplay, the same engine and only differ in level design and plot.

The trilogy includes the episodes:

  • Episode 1 - The Hunt for Red Rock Rover
  • Episode 2 - Kill Again Island
  • Episode 3 - Dr. No body

Gameplay

The player controls a secret agent who appears in the game itself only under the name "Agent 006½". All 3 episodes each have 16 levels. All levels contain the same main mission: get to the radar antenna, destroy it and then blast an escape route free to exit the level.

The most important innovation in Secret Agent is the map, which the player can use to choose any level. The basic idea of being able to choose the order of the levels yourself was implemented in the previous game, Crystal Caves . The really new thing about Secret Agent , however, is the bird's eye view of a map. A concept that was later continued in all parts of the Apogee game Commander Keen .

In order to get to the radar antenna, "Agent 006½" first has to overcome a series of obstacles: pools of water in which sharks swim, laser barriers, self-firing systems, locked doors, land mines, guard dogs, armed opponents, robots, drones and cyborgs. The keys are distributed over the level. In addition, "Agent 006½" has to find a floppy disk with which he can deactivate the laser barrier. In many levels there are also invisible platforms that can be made visible using special sunglasses. There are also movable barrels that can be used to reach items higher up . After the radar antenna is destroyed, the dynamite still has to be found in order to blast the escape route free.

The items consist mainly of high score points . There are also ammunition and special items that allow the character to run faster, jump higher or shoot faster for a short time. There are also keys, a floppy disk to crack the computer for the laser barrier and the dynamite bundle for the escape route. The high score items "S", "P" and "Y" result in extra points if they are collected in the correct order.
