Second polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The second polka is a polka française by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 258). The work was first performed on August 27, 1861 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The polka was created in the summer of 1861 during another trip the composer made to Russia. There it was premiered under the title A Bouquet of Memory . In Vienna the work was given its current title, which has nothing to do with the second . Rather, it is a musical concept of harmony. It is about semitone intervals that Strauss used in this polka. The composition was dedicated to the Austrian musician Josef Hellmesberger senior . The first performance of the polka in Vienna took place on November 17, 1861 in the Sofienbad Hall . Later it was somewhat forgotten and was rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 26 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
