The term SecurDisc encompasses various processes that are intended to increase the security of data on optical media ( CD , DVD , Blu-ray Disc, etc.). SecurDisc was developed by Hitachi-LG Data Storage and Nero AG . SecurDisc is sometimes confused with or equated with the SecuROM copy protection system , but has nothing to do with it.

Data security

Data security is increased by the fact that data is stored several times on one medium. This reduces the useful capacity accordingly. For example, if you only want to burn 100 MB on a CD with 700 MB capacity, SecurDisc can write the data 7 times. This can be of particular interest for long-term archiving of data on DVD-RAMs .

Password protection

Data can be encrypted on request. In the first versions of the software using AES-128 , from version 4, 256-bit encryption is also possible. For decryption, the user must enter a password in a program, which is sent encrypted to the drive. Decryption only takes place there. This method is more difficult to attack than an exclusively software-based solution.

early warning system

The drive uses software to inform the user when media are difficult to read and there is a risk of the media failing. The user can then copy the data to the hard drive in good time.

Digital signature

To guarantee authenticity, it is possible to digitally sign a medium . To check a signed medium, the InCD or InCD Reader software version 5 or higher is required.

PDF copy protection (only for DVDs)

SecurDisc can burn PDF files onto a medium in such a way that they can be read but not copied (or changed). Viewer software combined with the SecurDisc drive is required to view the protected files. These are currently only available for Windows versions (as of June 2013).
