Secure user plane location
Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) is a protocol for assisted GPS . SUPL was specified by the Open Mobile Alliance and is used to quickly determine GPS satellite data using so-called user plane carrier protocols such as IP . This means that position information can usually be obtained much faster than via GPS satellite signals (50 b / s).
SUPL is based on existing standards such as OMA Push , OMA Mobile Location Service, as well as various 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards.
architecture
The SUPL architecture essentially comprises two elements:
- SUPL terminal device referred to as SUPL Enabled Terminal (SET)
- SUPL Location Platform (SLP)
The SET is a mobile device on which a SUPL client has been installed and configured. The SLP is a network element, mostly an independent server, which takes care of user authentication, position requests and roaming. Communication between the mobile device and the SLP takes place via standard protocols such as TCP / IP and SMS .
application areas
Areas of application for SUPL are primarily in the area of location-based services (LBS) for mobile devices.
