The seaman's club Welcome in Bremerhaven has existed since the end of 2002 and is located at the Nordschleuse near the container terminal .

history

With his speech at the Wittenberg Kirchentag in Germany in 1848, Johann Hinrich Wichern gave the decisive impetus for the foundation of the diaconal works and the German Seamen's Mission . The first seaman's home in Germany was founded in Bremen in 1854, the first inland seaman's mission was founded in Hamburg in 1891 .

The “Welcome” seaman's club was opened in December 2002 at its current location in a new building at the Nordschleuse. It replaced the previous Bremerhaven seaman's club "Gute Stube", which had been in Gatehouse II at the container terminal in Bremerhaven since 1977 and was the first club in Europe to be located in the immediate vicinity of the ship's berths. The “Welcome” seaman's club is part of the Bremerhaven seaman's mission , which also maintains the seaman's hotel Portside and an on-board visit service .

Club work

In addition to several full-time employees, up to seven (2018) women and men who complete the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) work in the seaman's club. In addition, volunteers are involved who work on site, but also in the on-board service and when the seafarers are picked up from the ships.

In 2017 around 25,000 guests visited the Bremerhaven Sailors Club. The employees and volunteers carried out 1,300 ship visits, as not all seafarers always disembark in port.

In the same year church services were held, devotions were also held in English, as well as baptisms, weddings and funerals. The religious services and largely “church activities” are the responsibility of the Seemannsfarramt of the Seemannsmission.

Furnishing

At the clubhouse, one of the largest of the German Seamen's Mission, has a lounge, equipped with a variety of games, musical instruments, wireless features and mini kiosk for drinks, international newspapers and necessary utensils, as well as telephone booths for contact home, a small library and a prayer room. There is also an internet café and a room has been set up with tables for pool and table tennis. A flexible outdoor sports field for basketball, handball, soccer and volleyball as well as a sheltered terrace complete the equipment.

Award

The Bremerhaven Seafarers' Club was voted one of the five best seafarers' clubs in 2012 as part of a vote among seafarers and won first place in 2015. Seafarers around the world nominate their favorites in the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare (ICSW) competition either in writing or via the Internet.
