The museum is located in the old Kornschütte , a former grain warehouse with a wine press , which was built in 1717 by the former Kreuzlingen monastery near a former landing point for cargo sailing ships and renovated and restored between 1990 and 1993.

Museum concept

The foundation pursues the following goals: “The Seemuseum collects and preserves evidence of life and work with Lake Constance and of its research and presentation in science and art. The Seemuseum is a place of learning and study. It explains and stages how people used Lake Constance as a fishing water and as a transport route, how they researched Lake Constance and how they saw and changed the Lake Constance landscape. The Seemuseum wants (...) to convey the relationship between man and lake in the course of history in an eventful way. The purpose of the museum is to arouse understanding for the threatened cultural landscape and the natural area around Lake Constance among locals and guests. "

1500 m² of space on four floors are primarily available for the permanent exhibitions on Lake Constance fishing and Lake Constance shipping . Among other things, some original exhibits of sailing and fishing boats and around 50 models of Lake Constance ships are presented and explained here. Paintings, graphics and photographs on the topic of Lake Constance are shown in temporary exhibitions. In addition, the Maritime Museum provides information on special topics, such as B. 2012 on the history of the Jura or 2013/2014 with the special exhibition FisCHe . The number of visitors increased from 5,000 to 7,000 in 2013 compared to the previous year.
