Seahorse fountain

The seahorse fountain is a fountain monument in Burtscheid based on a design by the Aachen architect Gerhard Thomalla, which was originally installed in the rotunda of the Elisenbrunnen in 1953 after it was rebuilt. The bronze figures of the six seahorses standing upright around the fountain column were created by the Aachen sculptor Josef "Jupp" Zeller. The fountain bowl made from a dark marble block comes from the stonemasonry workshop of Ewald Mies, a brother of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . It has a diameter of 3.30 meters. After the fountain was removed from the Elisenbrunnen, it was set up in the 1970s at its current location on Burtscheider Kapellenstrasse.

Trivia

When Josef Zeller created the Seahorses in 1953, he lived with his family very close to what is now the Brunnen location, in the house at Kapellenstrasse 45 (which had to give way to the Ferberpark extension).
