In the naval battle near Elba in the First Anglo-Dutch War , jul met on August 27th . / September 6, 1652 greg. Ships of the United Provinces of the Netherlands on ships of the Commonwealth of England between Elba and Montecristo . In the United Kingdom it is also called the Battle of Monte Christo .

The English were on their way to Livorno with eight ships under Richard Badiley , where six ships under Henry Appleton were moored. The Dutch under Johan van Galen attacked with ten ships and were able to capture the English Phoenix . Many Dutch captains were killed in the battle.

In November, two months later, Captain Owen Cox launched a night attack on the Phoenix , which was anchored at Livorno as part of the Dutch fleet and blocked Appleton's squadron. The English were able to recapture their former ship.
