In the naval battle of Dover (called in English naval battle of the Goodwin Sands ) on May 29, 1652 (May 19, 1652 according to the Julian calendar used in England) the fleets of the Commonwealth of England and the United Provinces of the Netherlands met. This sea battle was the prelude to the First Anglo-Dutch War , there were no winners.
prehistory
In October 1651, the adopted English Parliament the first Navigation Act ( Navigation Acts ) and certain that only ships from England and the country of origin of goods were allowed to move to England. When, in the spring of 1652, George Ayscue brought up 27 Dutch ships trading with the royalist colony of Barbados , the Dutch became even more angry. The Commonwealth had previously imposed an embargo on the royalists as part of the English Civil War . On the other hand, after the death of the Dutch governor Wilhelm II, the foreign policy of the United Netherlands was determined by the large trading companies of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The States General decided on March 3, 1652 to enlarge the fleet, 150 merchant ships were hired and equipped as warships.
Then the Commonwealth began on March 12, 1652 also with war preparations. Since both parties were hardly prepared, some time would have passed before the outbreak of war. But on May 29, 1652 there was a chance meeting of the fleets of the Dutch Admiralty Lieutenant Maarten Tromp and General for the Sea Robert Blake in the English Channel near Dover . One of Cromwell's instructions required all foreign fleets in the North Sea or the Channel to lower their flags in greeting. When Tromp refused, there was a battle.
The battle
A Dutch convoy of 40 ships under Tromp met 25 English ships under Blake. When Tromp delayed the flag salute, Blake fired three warning shots. The third shot hit the flagship Tromps, the Brederode , and injured some sailors. Tromp responded with a broadside of his flagship. This resulted in a five-hour naval battle in which the Dutch were overwhelmed because of their numerical superiority and both fleets were damaged. When dusk fell, the Dutch ships withdrew to protect the convoy. The English managed to intercept two stragglers, sank the Sint Maria and captured the Sint Laurens , which they soon gave up. The Sint Laurens managed to get back home.
consequences
The Dutch lost two ships, but were able to save the convoy. The Commonwealth declared war on the Netherlands on July 10, 1652.
