Seesteine (Hoher Meissner)
The sea stones are located at a height of almost 600 meters on the Hohe Meißner in the East Hessian mountains . Part of this natural monument was built around 1880 by foresters, nature lovers and hikers. The natural monument consists mainly of massive basalt rocks .
The natural monument got its name from a now silted lake below the sea stones.
A picture board is placed in front of the sea stones. This shows a scene of leisure activities as it could have happened there at the beginning of the last century.
The Werra Valley Association, founded in 1883, has been taking care of the maintenance and care of the facility for decades . A shelter was built a little north of the Seesteine in 1925. School classes that visit the Meißner youth forest home have been carrying out the maintenance work since 1995.
In July 2004, the German Forest Protection Association set up a “ Forest Thought Path” on the Seesteinen. In different places there are now tablets with poems by famous personalities.
