Silk thread mills , also Lucca Filatorium or simply Lucca called, were used for twisting of filament silk . In Europe, twist mills of this type were operated in Paris, Cologne and, above all, Northern Italy from the 13th century.

The silk threads were twisted from bobbins by means of attached wire wings in twos, threes or more and drawn off on reels , or existing twist was reinforced again by the process.

The twist mills were driven by a water wheel , göpel , sometimes also by treadmills or hand cranks . A filatorium with 200 to 240 spindles running simultaneously resulted in a 25 to 50-fold increase in productivity compared to manual labor.
