Nii Sekinari (2008)

Sekinari Nii ( Japanese 二 井 関 成 , Nii Sekinari ; born March 20, 1943 in Mine , Yamaguchi Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and was governor of Yamaguchi from 1996 to 2012.

Nii became a civil servant in the Department of Self-Government in 1966 after graduating from the Tokyo University Faculty of Law . From 1982 he also taught at the Shōbō-Daigakkō , the academy of the national fire department . From 1983 he worked for Nihon Shōbō Kyōkai , the "Japanese Fire Brigade Company", from 1984 in the prefectural administration of Yamaguchi, most recently from 1994 as head of the finance department ( suitōchō ), one of the "three [important] offices" of a prefectural administration. In 1996, Nii ended his civil service career and turned to politics.

In the Yamaguchi gubernatorial election in August 1996, Governor Tohoru Hirai did not run again after five terms. Hirai supported the candidacy of former national MP and minister Akira Fukida , although this was supported by the opposition parties NFP and Kōmei . Nii had the formal support of the LDP , de facto mainly the Mitsuzuka faction , and was able to beat Fukida, former national MP Katsuhiko Ozawa (supported by the New Sakigake Party ) and two candidates for the Liberal League and the CPJ . After that, he was confirmed in office three times each time against only one CPY candidate.

In the 2012 election he was no longer a candidate, and Shigetaro Yamamoto was elected as Nii's successor with his support .
