Formononetin is a chemical compound belonging to the isoflavone class . It is assigned to the phytoestrogens because it is a plant compound with estrogen-like biological activity. The substance does not have a steroidal structure, its effect is weak.
Occurrence
Formononetin occurs particularly in the upper parts of the plant of the meadow clover (red clover), and also in certain legume species.
It is usually glycosidically bound; the 7-O-β-D- glucopyranoside of formononetin is ononin .
