A secondary biliary cirrhosis is a disease of the liver , which is by the chronic backlog of bile in the liver to damage to the liver cells with development of liver cirrhosis occurs.

In contrast to primary biliary cirrhosis , secondary biliary cirrhosis is not an independent, homogeneous clinical picture, but rather the sequel to another causal disease.

causes

Causes of the chronic backlog of the bile can be chronic cholangitis , strictures of the bile ducts, chronic choledocholithiasis , congenital biliary anomalies; Cystic fibrosis or Alagille syndrome (arteriohepatic dysplasia).

therapy

In order to avoid or treat secondary biliary cirrhosis, the unimpeded flow of bile from the liver into the biliary tract and ultimately into the digestive system must be restored. Depending on the cause of the biliary backlog, this can occur e.g. B. be done by stent placement in a bile duct or z. B. by removing a gallstone that is trapped in a bile duct.
