procedure

On February 1, 2013, there was a suicide attack on the US embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara . The assassin Ecevit Şanlı had reached a security gate, where guards checked visitors and checked their luggage. There the man blew himself up. The perpetrator and a security guard were killed. The well-known television journalist Didem Tuncay was seriously injured. Turkish media reported several injuries.

There was no damage in the main building of the embassy as it is far away from the sentry box. The Turkish police cordoned off a large area because they feared a second attack.

Investigations

The first identification of the assassin Ecevit Şanlı alias Alişan Şanlı was made by a mole on the head of the perpetrator. One day after the explosion, the DHKP-C confessed to the attack. The assassin Alişan Şanlı sacrificed himself on February 1, the organization said on February 2, 2013 on a website that is close to the group. America is the main enemy of the peoples, the statement said.

Three people were arrested in connection with the attack. These were later released.

The assassin lived in Germany for a long time and is said to have entered Turkey via the Greek islands. In July 1997, Şanlı participated in armed raids on police headquarters and an officers' mess in Istanbul and spent several years in prison. After a mass hunger strike in prison, during which he suffered both physical and psychological damage, he was given exemption and subsequently fled to Germany in 2001.

The German security authorities have been investigating him since spring 2011 on suspicion of membership in a foreign terrorist organization. This was the DHKP-C, which is banned in Germany. As early as 2009, leaflets and magazines related to the DHKP-C were found on him. In this case, however, the investigation was discontinued. In October 2012, the security authorities then lost his track.
