Self sterility
Self-sterility (self-sterility) is a term used for the property of plants to be incapable of fertilizing themselves. After pollination with their own pollen from genotypically identical individuals, seed formation does not occur . For example, the varieties of apple , cocoa , pear and sweet cherry are usually self-sterile, which means that these varieties may not be grown as a monoculture over a large area . In contrast to this is self-fertility .
In various fungi, self-sterility is achieved through the mechanism of heterothallia .
