Selden Society

The Selden Society is a not-for-profit British scientific society that publishes legal historical sources for England and Wales . It is named after the English lawyer and polymath John Selden .

It was founded in 1887 by Frederic William Maitland with the support of British legal institutions and under the patronage of Queen Victoria . Since its inception, it has generally published one volume of the main series (sources in the original with translation as well as introduction and commentaries) per year and there are also a number of supplement volumes. Around 150 volumes had appeared by 2013. A centenary guide was published in 1988.

Every two years it awards the David Yale Prize, named after a former President of the Society, for young historians in the legal history of England and Wales.

The current president is the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales Igor Judge (2013). The annual general meeting takes place in July at the Lincoln's Inn .

She works with the Ames Foundation at Harvard Law School and there are also meetings in the US and Australia .
