Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed

Selespeed is the name for an automated manual transmission from Alfa Romeo , which is now also used at Fiat (e.g. Fiat Stilo , model Abarth). In principle, all components of a conventional gearshift are available ( clutch , transmission ), but they are operated automatically. A conventional fully automatic system, on the other hand, works on a completely different principle and, for example, always costs a little performance.

Therefore there is no clutch pedal. The driver only gives commands to upshift and downshift, after which the automatic actuates the elements of the clutch and the transmission automatically. The commands can either be operated via buttons on the steering wheel or via a joystick in the center console.

Starting with the 2001 series, the gearshifts are automatically carried out quickly or slowly (and more gently), depending on the driving situation. For example, if the accelerator pedal is pressed hard, the system adopts a sportier driving style and shifts accordingly quickly.

In the case of the mass-produced models, the Selespeed system also includes protection against over- revving the engine : once a certain engine speed is reached, upshifts are carried out automatically. However , this protection is deactivated for GTA models .

In any case, there are functions for convenience, for example the system automatically downshifts if the car is too slow for the current gear.
