Selim I. Giray

Selim I. Giray (* before 1671; † 1704 ) was in the years 1671–1678, 1684–1691, 1692–1699 and 1702–1704 Khan of the Crimea .

Life

Selim was a talented military leader and statesman. He took part in various wars on the side of his suzerain , the Sublime Porte . There were the Ottoman-Polish War 1672–1676 , the Ottoman-Russian War 1676–1681 (in the course of which he was overthrown in 1678 and replaced by Murad Giray , a process to which Selim had to bow several times in his career) or the War of the Holy League against the Ottomans 1684–1700. In the latter, he prevented the collapse of the Ottoman Empire on the northeast flank in the fight against Poland and Russia .

Selim Giray died in 1704. In the office of the Crimean Khan he was succeeded by azı III. Giray after.
