The Russo-Turkish War 1676–1681 (also known as the 1st Russian Turkish War ) was a war between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Tsarist Empire for supremacy over Ukraine . At the beginning of the war, the West Ukrainian hetman and Ottoman vassal Petro Doroshenko took the town of Chyhyryn on the right bank of the Dnieper (the former capital of Bohdan Khmelnitsky ), but was taken prisoner by superior Muscovite-Cossack troops under Ivan Samoylowytsch and Vasily Rodomanovsky . The following year, Chyhyryn was besieged by an Ottoman army under Ibrahim Pasha . The aim of the Ottomans was to appoint Yuriy Khmelnytskyi as a hetman for the whole of Ukraine and an Ottoman vassal. However, the defenders were able to hold the city. It was not until the summer of 1678 that an army under Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pascha succeeded in taking the city, which was largely destroyed in the process. Due to the ravages of war in the surrounding area and high losses, it soon had to be abandoned.

Peace treaty

The war ended with the Treaty of Bakhchysaraj of January 13, 1681, which provided for a 20-year armistice. The Dnepr was set as the demarcation line, while the area between Bug and Dnepr should remain unpopulated. The Cossacks living there were relocated to the left bank. The Ottoman Empire retained Podolia, the area around Brazlaw and the area south of Kiev and recognized the Muscovite sovereignty over the left bank of the Dnepr and the area of ​​the Zaporozhe Cossacks .
