from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Semei Kakungulu (* 1869 ; † November 24, 1928 ) was a Ugandan warrior and founder of the Abayudaya .

During the establishment of colonial rule over Uganda , Kakungulu fought for the British and conquered the areas of Bukedi and Busoga . He also accepted the Protestant faith from them. He was rewarded with a post of governor in eastern Uganda, where he founded the city of Mbale . But his endeavors to be recognized by the British as a king, similar to the one in the other areas of the Protectorate, were unsuccessful and the disparity between the British understanding of religion written in the Bible and the real understanding of religion of the British was strange to Kakungulu, so that he agreed with the British broke and also turned away from her belief. He approached the Abamalaki sect , who lived a Christian faith with Jewish elements. The Jewish commandments spoke to Kakungulu so much that he left the Abamalaki and declared that he was now a Jew and that he would live according to the Jewish commandments. He gathered followers with whom he settled near Mbale and formed the Abayudaya.
