Mbale is a city in eastern Uganda at the foot of Mount Elgon with 76,492 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Mbale district of the same name .
history
Mbale originated in the early 20th century and was founded by European settlers. The streets of the city are therefore laid out in a grid. Most of the buildings date from the Second World War. The economy is largely ruled by Indian traders who also make up a large part of the population.
The city has been the seat of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and the National Park Administration of Mount Elgon National Park since 1988 .
A large part of the Abayudaya , one of the few groups of black African Jews, live near Mbale .
Mbale has a rail connection in the direction of Pakwach and is connected to the rail connection of the northern line of the Uganda Railway between Kampala and Nairobi or Mombasa in Kenya . The city is also a junction in Uganda's road system with routes to Soroti , Jinja , Tororo and Kenya. It is the region's trading center, especially for the cultivated coffee .
