Semtex is the trade name of a plastic explosive that is used for military purposes in addition to commercial demolitions. According to the Montreal Convention, industrially manufactured Semtex must be treated with marking substances in most states , which enable dogs and explosives detectors to find the explosives .

Semtex was invented in 1966 by Stanislav Brebera , a chemist at VCHZ Synthesia. The explosives were first produced by the Semtin Glassworks company in Czechoslovakia (later VCHZ Synthesia , now Explosia ). Semtex is named after Semtín , a suburb of Pardubice in Eastern Bohemia . It consists largely of nitropenta and hexogen , the rest is mineral oil thickened with styrene-butadiene rubber . Nowadays, the explosives are provided with markers to ensure traceability.
