Taldom transmitter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Taldom transmitter is a large transmitter in Taldom in Moscow Oblast , 110 kilometers north of Moscow.

history

The construction of the transmitter was commissioned by the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1949 . At the same time, the transmission system was to cover large areas of the country, broadcast foreign programs and interfere with enemy broadcasters from the west.

Construction work began in 1951, and the town of Severny was rebuilt specifically to accommodate the workers. In 1952 the transmitter went on air for the first time. In 1984 the world's most powerful radio station went into operation in Taldom, broadcasting the first program on long wave with an output of 2.5 MW. The operation of this transmitter was stopped in 2014 for cost reasons.

Furnishing

The Taldom transmitter system consists of 30 different antenna systems, which in turn consist of 70 guyed masts and 13 free-standing towers. The highest mast is 257 m high. From here programs are or were broadcast on VHF, long wave and short wave.

Programs

The first program, later Radio Rossii , was broadcast on the frequency of 261 kHz with a transmission power of 2.5 MW. Due to its immense transmission power, this frequency covered large parts of the European part of Russia. After only the reserve transmitter with a significantly lower output had been used for years, the frequency was finally switched off in 2014 for cost reasons. After the Burg transmitter was switched off in 2000, the transmitter could also be heard in Germany during the night.

The youth program, later YuFM , was broadcast on the frequency 153 kHz with a transmission power of 300 kW. The frequency was switched off in 2010 when the broadcasting of the youth program via medium wave was generally stopped; the frequency at the Taldom location was the only long wave frequency in Russia that broadcast the youth program.

The formerly extensive shortwave broadcasts of the voice of Russia from this location were largely discontinued with the shift in international coverage to other channels of transmission (Internet, satellite). Taldom continues to broadcast a time signal transmitter (RBU) on the frequency 66.66 kHz. The transmitter also serves as a VHF transmitter for the location itself.
