Senegambia (colony)

Senegambia (also known in the English name Province of Senegambia ) was a brief British crown colony (1765–1779) in the area of ​​today's Senegal and Gambia in the 18th century and was disputed between the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Great Britain . It was considered Britain's first formal colony in West Africa .

The Kingdom of Great Britain conquered the trading posts in French Senegal on April 30, 1758 during the Seven Years' War .

After the end of the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), the area was ceded to Great Britain with the Peace of Paris in 1763 and continued as a crown colony of Senegambia from 1765. In the Second Peace of Paris of 1783 , also known as the Treaty of Versailles of 1783 , parts of Senegambia were returned to France as a result of the British defeat in the American War of Independence between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies in North America, which were supported by France assigned.

The name was also used for the Senegambia Confederation between Senegal and Gambia in the 20th century .
