Separate Reality is a 20 m long climbing route in Yosemite National Park in California , USA . The route is known for its key point , an approximately 6 m long hand crack in a roof . The start of the route is about 200 m above the Merced River , but is better reached by abseiling from above. The name is the novel “Another Reality. New Conversations with Don Juan. ” (1971, original title: A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan ) taken by Carlos Castaneda .

The reason for the fascination that this route exerts on climbers, however, is less the technical difficulty, but rather a certain exposure of the route and the associated demands on the psyche ( seriousness ).

The route was first used by Ron Kauk climbed in 1978 and originally with the difficulty rated 5.12a. Due to a stone demolition, during which another handle was exposed, the rating is now 5.11d (French 7a / 7b). In 1986 the exceptional German climber Wolfgang Güllich made the first free solo ascent of the route. The second rope-free ascent was made in 2005 by the Austrian Heinz Zak , who photographed Wolfgang Güllich during his ascent in 1986. In the summer of 2006, the American Dean Potter was the third climber to climb this route free solo. In June 2010 she also climbed Alex Honnold as the fourth climber free solo. The Canadian Will Stanhope also climbed the route in this ascent style.
