Sepsis Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sepsis Foundation is a non-profit foundation that was founded in 2012 as a foundation under civil law based in Jena . It promotes education, science, research and innovation on the subject of sepsis in order to reduce the number of deaths and those affected with consequential damage from sepsis through earlier diagnosis, quality-assured treatment, as well as education about early detection and prevention. The foundation was recognized on October 19, 2012 by the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior. Kurt Biedenkopf and his wife Ingrid Biedenkopf are the patrons. Representatives of the German Sepsis Society, the Jena University Hospital and the SepNet study group are represented on the foundation's board . The board of trustees includes representatives of the Deutsche Sepsis-Hilfe eV and personalities from politics, science, society and business. A scientific advisory board was appointed in 2019 and supports the work of the foundation as an additional source of ideas and through scientific advice.

In 2012, the Sepsis Foundation initiated the call for a National Sepsis Plan. Since 2017, under the patronage of the Action Alliance for Patient Safety eV in Germany, together with the German Sepsis Aid, the German Sepsis Society, the German Society for Infectious Diseases and the Global Sepsis Alliance, the implementation of the meanwhile by numerous medical societies and high-ranking Representatives from society and science requested the National Sepsis Plan.

Motivation for founding

The Sepsis Foundation emerged from the Sepsis Competence Network ("SepNet") funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2002 to 2010 , an interdisciplinary study network of scientists and experts on the subject of sepsis. A prevalence study carried out as part of SepNet presented valid epidemiological data on the incidence of sepsis for Germany for the first time. This study showed that sepsis is one of the most common causes of death in Germany. Among other things, it is thanks to the scientific work of SepNet that the dangers posed by infectious diseases and sepsis are increasingly noticed by the public.

The establishment of the Sepsis Foundation was linked to the clear goal of overcoming the limited possibilities of a scientific study group, to give this disease of sepsis, which is hardly known to the public, a stronger visibility and to give those affected and their families a weighty voice. In contrast to many other diseases that are far less common and not associated with such a high mortality rate, sepsis is too little known in all respects. This was and still applies to the research level as well as to society and politics.

aims

Sepsis is responsible for almost 20% of all deaths in Germany and worldwide. In Germany, 15,000–20,000 sepsis deaths per year are considered avoidable. The Sepsis Foundation works to ensure that fewer people die from this cause of death, which is preventable in many cases. This requires faster diagnosis, better treatment and more preventive measures. For survivors, sepsis-specific, integrated rehabilitation offers are needed and the illness must be recognized by the pension insurance.

To achieve this,

  • the Sepsis Foundation promotes clinical research,
  • is committed to educating the population and medical professionals and
  • fights for the introduction of quality indicators and the implementation of a national sepsis plan with the support of the federal and state governments.

Milestones so far

Through public relations and political lobbying, the Sepsis Foundation has made a significant contribution to the fact that this "killer", which is completely underestimated in its human, medical and health-economic dimension, is more in the spotlight.

The following developments are milestones in the work of the Sepsis Foundation:

  1. The broad support of a memorandum in science and society.
  2. The adoption of a motion for a resolution on sepsis by the German Medical Association 2015 and the opening of a quality assurance procedure on sepsis by the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) in 2018.
  3. The promotion of quality improvement, education and research projects on sepsis by the innovation committee of the G-BA (project 'SepWiss').
  4. The contribution of the foundation to the global establishment of World Sepsis Day (World Sepsis Day) and to the adoption of a resolution by the 194 member states of the World Health Assembly in 2017, with which the WHO made sepsis a global priority.
  5. The response to the topic of sepsis in the media, which has increased significantly since 2012.
