Sergei Alexandrovich Khrennikov (before 1918)

Sergei Alexandrowitsch Chrennikow ( Russian Сергей Александрович Хренников ; * 1872 in Jelez , Orjol Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 25, 1929 in Moscow ) was a Russian-Soviet engineer specializing in metallurgy and shipbuilding . He was arrested by the OGPU as part of the preparations for the “ Trial against the Industrial Party ” . According to Solzhenitsyn , Khrennikov should appear as the main defendant in this Stalinist show trial. However, he died in pre-trial detention long before the trial began.

biography

In March 1914 Khrennikov became director of the ship and railway works "Sormowo" near Nizhny Novgorod . The "Sormowo" plant in the Russian Empire was a large industrial company with around 30,000 employees. The company manufactured cargo and passenger ships, locomotives and railroad cars, trams, and various other products.

With the outbreak of the First World War, the factory became an important manufacturer of weapons of all kinds. Under the direction of Khrennikov, production was converted to the manufacture of artillery shells, bombs and parts of firearms. In 1917 alone, the plant delivered more than 800,000 rounds of various types of ammunition to the Russian Army. After the October Revolution, however, production largely came to a standstill due to the general anarchic conditions in Russia.

In August 1918, Khrennikov was removed from his post. He then worked as an experienced engineer in Moscow in the various economic institutes and rose within the economic planning hierarchy of the Soviet Union. At the time of his arrest he was a board member of the Supreme Economic Council of the USSR.

On July 12, 1929, Khrennikov was arrested. Under the aegis of the chief prosecutor Nikolai Krylenko , it should be proven that Khrennikov should have worked with French and English secret services to overthrow the political system in the Soviet Union. Russian historians now assume that Khrennikov was so severely tortured during his pre-trial detention that he died of the injuries he caused.
