Sergei Ivanovich Schmatko ( Russian Сергей Иванович Шматко ; born September 26, 1966 in Stavropol ) is a Russian politician and businessman. Since May 12, 2008 he has been Minister of Energy in the Government of the Russian Federation .

Schmatko first studied mathematics from 1983 to 1985 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg ) and then did his military service in the Northern Fleet of the Soviet Navy . After serving in the army, he took up a degree in economics and went to Marburg in 1990 to complete this degree in Germany.

He started his professional career in 1992 as an auditor in Frankfurt am Main . He was then a consultant for investors in Russia and a representative of the Russian privatization authority to the European Union. In 1997 Schmatko switched to the energy industry, initially as an economist at the nuclear power producer Rosenergoatom . Parallel to his professional activity, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces . In 2005 he became head of the state-owned Atomstroiexport group . In this function he was also responsible for the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran.

On May 12, 2008 he was appointed Minister of Energy in the Government of the Russian Federation . Shmatko is chairman of the board of directors of the state-owned company Transneft , which operates the country's petroleum pipelines .
