Sergei Vladimirovich Bulanov

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sergei Wladimirowitsch Bulanow , Russian Сергей Владимирович Буланов , English transcription Sergei Bulanov, (born August 16, 1947 ) is a Russian plasma physicist.

Bulanov studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in the 1960s and began to deal with theoretical astrophysics and plasma physics (for example, plasmas generated by high-power lasers). Bulanov was a student of Sergei Ivanovich Syrowatski and Vitaly Lasarewitsch Ginsburg . He is at the National Institute for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology in Kyoto and at the Institute of General Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences named AM Prokhorov ( Институт общей физики имени А. М. Прохорова РАН ).

Among other things, he investigated the idea of relativistic mirrors for the generation of X-rays, whereby a laser beam is reflected by plasma waves that are divided up by non-linear interactions and form a thin layer of relativistic electrons. They are intended to provide an alternative to synchrotron radiation sources and free-electron lasers . The concept should serve not only for the development of compact radiation sources, but also for basic research in quantum electrodynamics (quantum phenomena in strong electromagnetic fields such as electron-positron pair generation from a vacuum ). He also worked on particle acceleration with laser plasmas (via radiation pressure). He is working on a laser ion accelerator for cancer therapy.

In 2016 he and Hartmut Zohm received the Hannes Alfvén Prize for their experimental and theoretical contributions to the development of the next stage of large-scale devices for researching high-temperature plasmas (laudation).
