Seria Field

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seria Field is the largest oil field in Northwest Borneo . It was discovered in 1929. The oil collects in sandstone layers from the Upper Miocene ( Messinian / Tortonian ) in the Seria Anticline , which extends along today's coastline. The oil field yielded more than 1 billion barrels of oil over 75 years . The Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) is the operating company of the oil production.

Exploitation of the field began with the discovery in 1926 when FF Marriot , the superintendent of the British Malay Petroleum Company , and TG Cochrane , general manager of Sarawak Oilfields Limited , smelled oil on an overland tour in the Kuala Belait area and commissioned a geophysical survey of the area .

Towards the end of World War II , the Japanese set fire to 14 of 21 springs before escaping. Australian workers tried to put out the fires.

swell

To date, more than 900 wells have been drilled in the Seria oil field and more than 350 are still producing today. Some known sources:

  • S-1 first test drilling, July 1928, production from April 1929.
  • S-2 from 1930. After two blowouts and sabotage during the war years, it developed a permanent, stable production.
  • S-5 , one of the oldest sources still mining.
  • S-328 , drilled in 1953, resulted in a direct blowout. With the force of a minor earthquake, it destroyed surrounding buildings and left a crater that filled with water.
  • S-454 was drilled in the middle of a residential area.
  • S-516 was drilled in 1956 and caused a violent blowout. A fountain of oil, gas and sand shot 30 m into the air and the spring had to be 'killed' with 90 t of earth and stuffing material.
  • S-558 was drilled across from Brunei Shell headquarters in 1964.
