Serkland (also Särkland) was the Old Norse name for the empire of the Muslim Abbasids and the neighboring regions in the 11th and 12th centuries .

It was mentioned on rune stones ( Ingvar stones ) and in the Icelandic sagas ( Ynglingasaga ).

Internationally, the Old Norse name Serkland was derived primarily from the same Greek roots as the Saracens , but the name of the Khazar town Sarkel or the Old Norse word for silk was also suspected. Another possibility is that Särkland means Ostland because the Arabic word for east, شرق, is spoken roughly like the Swedish word.
