The Serra da Bodoquena is a national park in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul . It has a size of 750 km² and was founded on September 21, 2000. The reserve of the indigenous people of the Kadiweu lies on the edge of the park.

location

The park is located in the southwest of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in the river valley of the Río Paraguay . The mountain range is about 250 km away from Campo Grande , the capital of the state. The nearest major city is Bonito , about 30 km away.

shape

The Serra da Bodoquena is divided into two parts. The eastern part rises gently and consists of limestone. In this part there are numerous karst features such as caves, canyons and ponors . The western part, on the other hand, rises steeply and has many gorges.

Flora and fauna

The park is part of the Mata Atlântica , a tropical rainforest that stretches from the Atlantic coast of Brazil to Paraguay. The biodiversity in the park is as high as in few places in the world. Currently runs to a biodiversity - monitoring of the Brazilian Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the GIZ . From the birds are worth mentioning: anodorhynchus , green-winged , Gelbbrustaras and harpies . A special attraction are the broad-snouted caimans and capybaras .
