Serra do Itajaí

The Serra do Itajaí is a mountain range with primeval forests of the Mata Atlântica in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil .

National park

On June 4, 2004, the Parque Nacional da Serra do Itajaí was established with an area of ​​573.74 km² in the municipalities of Ascurra , Apiúna , Blumenau , Botuverá , Gaspar , Guabiruba , Indaial , Presidente Nereu and Vidal Ramos .

The biodiversity is high, with some endemic and critically endangered species including canela-preta , canela-sassafrás , xaxim , gavião-pombo , pichochó , papagaio-de-peito-roxo .

The park has a high potential for ecotourism , which is encouraged to reduce pressure from the surrounding places. The role of water supplier is important for half a million people.
