history
Settlement of the region began with the arrival of German and Italian immigrants who arrived at the port of Itajaí around 1876. First they came to Brusque, took improvised canoes and ferries up the Rio Itajaí-Mirim and settled on the land they called “Porto Franco”. The settlement area was under Brusque, in 1925 the Distrito de Porto Franco was established, in 1943 it was renamed Distrito de Botuverá and the district was raised to the self-governing Munizip Botuverá in 1962 and spun off from Brusque.
