Servet Pëllumbi

Servet Pëllumbi (born December 14, 1936 in Korça ) is an Albanian politician of the Socialist Party (PS).

biography

After attending school, Pëllumbi studied philosophy at the University of Leningrad between 1955 and 1960 and then worked as a university lecturer . In addition, until the collapse of communism and the end of the People's Republic of Albania in 1991, he was an ideologist for the Labor Party (PPSh) and also the author of articles in theoretical journals . In 1991 he became deputy chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania , which he co-founded and which emerged from the communist PPSh, and in this role he advocated the implementation of changes in the party's program that should lead to a greater turn to socialism .

Pëllumbi was elected for the first time as a candidate for the PS for the Albanian Parliament in 1992 and was a member of the Albanian Parliament in the 13th legislative period until 1996. In October 1997 he resigned from his position as vice-party chairman during the 2nd PSC Congress after Fatos Nano , party chairman, accused him of striving for a Marxist orientation of the party and was jointly responsible for the defeat in the elections on May 26, 1996 to be.

Despite this criticism, he was re-elected to parliament in 1997 and has since represented Korça County . With the exception of the break from 1996 to 1997, he was a member of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Foreign Policy and International Relations between 1992 and 2001 and of the Parliamentary Delegation to the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) from 1997 to 2001 . From 2001 to 2002 he was vice-chairman of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Education, Culture, Science and Sport.

On April 30, 2002, Pëllumbi became President of Parliament, succeeding Namik Dokle until September 3, 2005. He was then followed by Jozefina Topalli ( PD ), the first female parliamentary speaker in Albanian history.
