Seto or Setu ( seto kiil´ ) is a Baltic Finnish language variety spoken on the southern Estonian - Russian border and often considered a dialect of Estonian . It is spoken by around 5000 people, predominantly in Southeast Estonia and in the immediately adjacent part of Pskov Oblast , in the so-called Land of the Seto (setu Setomaa , Estonian Setumaa ). Some of the speakers identify themselves as the Setukese , a special linguistic and cultural community whose traditional religion was Orthodox Christianity.

The Seto language for South-Estonian language expected and is Võro very similar, but only the setos (Seto) have very primitive, ancient traditions and strong identity, so you should Võro and Seto consider culturally rather separately.

According to another perspective, the Seto language is an Estonian or South Estonian dialect or another variant of Võro .

Related dialects are also Tartu and Mulgi .
