The Setra S 140 ES was an intercity bus from the manufacturer Kässbohrer . The bus was not a standard I-bus according to the specifications of the VÖV , but it had some components of the standard bus.

To allow for efficient production, the rejected Setra - buses of the company Kässbohrer of the body and the technical point since 1970 closely follows the. Coach of the company to. Nevertheless, they had a number of technical details that corresponded to the VÖV specifications for the standard bus I (e.g. standardized dashboard, central electrical compartment on the outside of the driver's seat). In 1974, the Kässbohrer company designed the S 140 ES for overland transport. The chassis and engine construction came from the S 140 E, the design was based on the S 130 S. The articulated bus variant based on the S 140 ES bore the designation SG 180, which, like the solo vehicle, was also offered with different door variants for urban and intercity traffic.

First, a diesel engine with 11.94 l displacement from Henschel was installed. From 1975 diesel engines from Daimler-Benz or MAN (both 210 hp, later 240 hp) were installed because engine production at Henschel had been discontinued. From 1981 the S 140 ES received the addition "Regional".

The Setra S 140 ES model was built almost unchanged until 1984 and replaced by the Setra S 215 UL .
