Sgurbio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sgurbio is a place (Contrada) in the east of the island of Alicudi . Alicudi belongs to the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea and to the municipality of Lipari . The island has been included in the Unesco World Heritage List as a natural monument .

geography

Sgurbio is about 200 meters above the seafront district of Bazzina and below the historic church of San Bartolo. In the south, Sgurbio borders the district Vallone in the direction of Alicudi Porto. In Sgurbio there are six inhabited houses, which are arranged one above the other on a rock ridge, and some abandoned ruins. According to the legend, they stand for the five senses , the lowest house is assigned to the so-called sixth sense.

Monument protection

As in all of Alicudi, there are strict building guidelines that are strictly adhered to, especially in the outer towns. Old ruins can be rebuilt. New buildings, as well as major changes to the landscape, are strictly forbidden. In the remote areas of Alicudi, structural changes are monitored by annual overflights of planes and helicopters of the Guardia di Finanza . Usually illegally built houses are demolished by court order.

particularities

A special feature is the massive rock north of the “entrance” of the Sgurbio. It is called the "creeping giant" by the locals because with a little imagination the rock looks like a crawling person. Due to the scarcely present scattered light within a radius of 40 km - there are no street lights on Alicudi - there is a unique starry sky by European standards.

A direct path to the Bazzina Alta and Bassa runs through the Sgurbio .
