Shabelle Media Network

Shabelle Media Network is a private broadcasting company from Somalia , in 2002 Merka was founded. The Shabelle Media Network is known for its critical stance, which includes both the transitional government and anti -government Islamist militias.

Radio Shabelle

The network's best-known station abroad is Radio Shabelle . The radio station hit the headlines when it was shot at by troops of the Somali interim government in September 2007. On September 20, the Shabelle Media Network announced the cessation of its activities.

On September 24, the station's director, Jafar “Kukay” Mohammed, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. After a two-week broadcast break, Radio Shabelle resumed broadcasting on October 3, 2007. On October 19, Radio Shabelle's “acting manager”, Bashir Nor Gedi, was shot dead by strangers in Mogadishu . On November 12, government soldiers closed the station again.

In December 2010, Reporters Without Borders presented Radio Shabelle with the Freedom of the Press Prize.
