Ulrich Mahlknecht

Ulrich Rudolph Mahlknecht (born April 29, 1967 in Ravensburg ) is a German doctor.

Life

Ulrich Mahlknecht grew up in Stern (La Villa), Abtei , Alta Badia , Gadertal , South Tyrol . He studied human medicine at the Universities of Bochum , Birmingham , Paris and Tübingen , where he received his doctorate in 1995. He began his specialist training at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1996 to 1999 Ulrich Mahlknecht was a postdoctoral fellow at the Picower Institute for Medical Research at the State University of New York . From 1999 to 2003 he continued his training as an internist specializing in hematology and oncology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt / Main, where he completed his habilitation in internal medicine. Since 2004 he has worked as a senior physician at the Medical Clinic of Heidelberg University , where he headed the Medical Task Force "Myeolodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and Acute Leukemia" (also known colloquially as blood cancer). At the same time he managed the MDS Center of Excellence in Heidelberg, of which he was the founder.

Ulrich Mahlknecht has scientifically led projects within the Emmy Noether program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and funded by the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation , which deal with research into the molecular basis and the development of epigenetic and immunotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of acute leukemia as well as the Employ MDS. In 2007 Ulrich Mahlknecht was appointed professor at the University of Saarland to the chair for immunotherapy and gene therapy, where he researched new molecular concepts for the treatment of acute leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome at the José Carreras Center for Immune and Gene Therapy . Ulrich Mahlknecht is President of the Clinical Epigenetics Society , an international not-for-profit association that aims to advance science and research in the field of clinical epigenetics, and founder of the scientific journal Clinical Epigenetics .

Since 2012 he has been head of the oncology and hematology department at the St. Lukas Clinic in Solingen as chief physician .

Awards

  • In May 2019, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States for his life's work in the service of health care and for his contributions to research and teaching.
