Shama (Ghana)

Shama is a fishing village with a population of 10,000 on the coast of Ghana in West Africa . The place is located about 20 kilometers east of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Shama District at the mouth of the Pra River in the Atlantic Ocean .
Shama is known and of historical importance for the former Portuguese fortress Fort San Sebastian built here , which is one of the oldest in Africa and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. Germany's first professor of African descent, Anton Wilhelm Amo (1703–1784) , who came from what is now Ghana and who spent his old age at San Sebastian Castle, is buried in Shama .
