Shamva

Shamva is both a Shona word for friendliness and the name of a village with about 5,000 inhabitants, which is located in Zimbabwe about 70 km north of Harare in the Mazoe Valley in the province of Mashonaland Central and lives mainly from mining. Shamva is the terminus of a branch line of the National Railways of Zimbabwe from Harare.

The village is located in the northern part of the Great Dyke and was founded in 1895 when gold was found there, as in many other places on the Great Dyke , which is still mined today in the Madziwa Mine together with nickel .

Cotton, corn, tobacco and tropical fruits are grown in the surrounding area. Shamva has a brewery, a cotton mill and a grain warehouse.

At Shamva, the “largest solar village in Africa” was realized as a project in River Estate in 2005 . The houses of around 150 smallholder families were connected to solar collectors, so that each house can operate two light bulbs, a radio and a small television.
