Sharpie is a brand for permanent markers and other writing implements from the US manufacturer Sanford , which has been part of the Newell Rubbermaid Group since 1992 .

The first Sharpie was sold in the United States in 1964 and was the first pen-type permanent marker on the market. There “Sharpie” is also used as a generic name for permanent markers, similar to Edding in German-speaking countries. A large number of permanent and non-permanent pens and markers are currently sold under the brand in over 20 countries. The brand is hardly known in German-speaking countries. US President Donald Trump uses a personalized Sharpie to publicly sign laws and executive orders.
