The shear cliff is a rocky cliff at the Borchgrevink Coast in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is one of the three striking cliffs south of Seabee Hook on the west side of the Hallett Peninsula , along with Salmon and Roberts Cliffs .
Participants in the 1957-1958 campaign as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition named it after the American meteorologist James Algan Shear (1919-1983), scientific director of the Hallett Station in 1957.
