Shi Yan

Shi Yan ( Chinese  史 岩 ; born October 10, 1904 in Yixing County , Jiangsu ; † 1994 ) was an eminent Chinese art historian . He worked from 1943 at the Dunhuang Art History Institute (Dunhuang yishu yanjiusuo). His work on the paintings and sculptures of the Dunhuang Grottoes ( Dunhuang shishi huxiang tishi ) from 1947 provided important materials for studying the wall paintings of the grottoes.

He is the author and editor of various art historical works, including one on the history of Chinese sculpture, one on sculpture from the Sui and Tang periods, and one on sculpture from the Five Dynasties and Song Dynasties.
