List of domestic dogs

The Shiba ( Japanese 柴犬 , Shiba-inu or Shiba-ken ) is a Japanese breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 5, Section 5, Standard No. 257 ).

Origin and history

There are three different theories about the meaning of the name: The first says that the name has to do with the color of the coat, derived from shiba-aka ( 柴 赤 ), a brownish red shade. Another possible origin is an old meaning of the character shiba ( ) for something small. Another possibility is the derivation of the place name Shiba-mura ( 柴 村 ) in Nagano prefecture . The character inu or ken ( ) means dog .

The Shiba is one of the typical Japanese breeds, as well as Hokkaido , Kishu , Shikoku , Kai and Akita . The Shiba is the smallest of these breeds physically.

The Shiba comes from hunting dogs from the mountainous regions of the Sea of Japan, which were used to hunt small game and birds. Systematic breeding began in 1928 after this type of dog had become rare due to crossbreeding with English hunting dogs. In 1934 the Shiba standard was created. In 1937 the Shiba received the status of "National Natural Monument" in Japan.

Along with the Akita, the Shiba is one of the most popular dogs in Japan, although small European breeds are also enjoying increasing popularity. The modern Shiba is very different from the Shiba, which was typical in Japan 100 years ago. In the past, the Shiba were a bit more stocky and short-legged. Two strokes have developed from it: On the one hand the described and on top of that a long-legged, strong, elegant looking representative of this breed. Shiba Inu bred in the USA are often more muscular and larger than the specimens that are predominantly used in breeding in Japan and Europe.

Like the Akita, he is one of the primitive races that have a particular genetic proximity to the wolf.

description

Sesame Shiba Inu

The Shiba grows up to 40 cm. The head is broad with a distinct stop . Small, widely spaced, triangular erect ears complete the picture, as does the straight, moderately thick muzzle. The whole dog looks well proportioned. The top hair in the colors red, black and tan, sesame (black-sesame or red-sesame) is rather hard and straight with a rich, dense and soft undercoat. The tail lies curled up on or over the back.

The color "sesame" is defined as follows:

  • Sesame: Even mixture of red and black hair
  • Black sesame: More black than red hair
  • Red sesame: basic color red, mixture with black hair

All colors listed must be Urajiro . Urajiro is the whitish hair on the sides of the muzzle and cheeks, under the muzzle, on the throat, on the chest and belly, on the underside of the tail and on the inside of the limbs.

In the Shiba, reduced red blood cells ( microcytosis ) are physiological.
