Shibaozhai
Shibaozhai ( Chinese 石寶寨 / 石宝寨 , Pinyin Shíbǎozhài , English Precious Stone Fortress ) is a 200 m high hill on the banks of the Yangtze River in Zhong District of the government-direct city of Chongqing in the People's Republic of China .
On the side that once turned towards the Yangtze is the Red Pagoda with twelve floors. It was built on the flank of a rock and is 56 meters high. A swaying bridge made of wooden slats leads from the village to the pagoda and the temple. (In the past there was probably only one footpath.) The pagoda is accessible up to the 9th floor; the exit leads directly into the temple complex, which was built by Emperor Qianlong . The red pagoda was built in 1819.
With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam , only the part above the top of the red pavilion would have been visible. The pagoda and the adjoining temple complex were protected with the help of a rubber dam . From the foot of the hill on the river bank up to the yellow entrance of the pavilion, numerous traders can be found, because the Red Pagoda is a popular destination for the Yangtze river cruise.
Since 2001, Shibaozhai has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-381) .
