A cofferdam or cofferdam or in some areas even cofferdam is in hydraulic engineering a temporary barrier or a temporary dam to drain the construction field for the construction certain areas.

The term is cofferdam actually the mistranslation ( False Friend ) of the English term "coffer dam", which translates correctly cofferdam means.

When building bridges , a suitcase or coffer dam is a system that creates a dry area on the water floor that is accessible from above. For example, it can be designed as a large open cylinder that is placed on the bottom of a river . After pumping out the vertical cylinder, a bridge foundation can be created in a river - a method that was often used by the Romans to build bridges.

In dam construction , a suitcase or coffer dam is a temporary dam structure that is used to hold water during construction, e.g. B. for a dam to divert the river or to prevent the excavation pit from being flooded during flooding. Examples of possible designs are: bulk dam, box trap dam, cell trap dam and sheet pile wall .
