Before the church was built, the Catholic and Protestant parishes of Hückeswagen shared the former St. Nicholas Church, the predecessor of the Paulus Church , until 1674. Then the Catholic parish was allowed to use the former palace of the Count's Palace as a place of worship. Pastor Johann Peter Heinrich Giesen (1797-1892), who was also called “the beggar priest” in town and country, finally managed to collect the necessary 94,000 marks so that the construction of a new church could begin. A "valuables lottery" played a large part in this, and it poured 36,013.88 marks into the community's empty coffers. On June 7, 1881 the foundation stone for the church was laid.

When determining the architectural style, a decision was made in favor of a so-called ship church in the round arch style, with the late Romanesque St. Nicholas Church in Wipperfürth serving as a model . The stones of the foundation of the church also came from three Hückeswagen quarries; A break in Wipperfürth was used for the outer masonry. On November 12, 1882 , only a year and a half after the foundation stone was laid, the neo-Romanesque church was consecrated. In memory of Pastor Giesen, his grave slab was placed to the left of the main portal.

From 1957 to 1959, St. Mary's Assumption was a parallel church, as a church expansion had become necessary. The left aisle was torn down and a new building was built; the right part remained.

In the baptistery (formerly the apse) there are three stained glass windows from 1954. They were designed by the Osnabrück glass painter Theo M. Landmann . In the middle window “Mary, Queen of Heaven” is shown. The tabernacle cladding, a driving work in copper, by Cologne metal sculptor Eva Burgeff, dates from the same year .

During the last renovation from 1996 to 1997 the altar area was redesigned. Not an artist, but the Dahmen und Mertens architects from Düsseldorf was commissioned. Anröchter dolomite from the Sauerland was used, which includes essential components such as an altar, baptismal font or vault. Four previously unadorned round windows in the side aisle have been renewed. The Kolping Family donated a window in honor of Adolph Kolping, a retired sister donated a window portrait of Saint Agnes, plus a window of Saint Cecilia and a window of Francis. These four new windows complement the existing Katharinen window, with which five painted windows adorn the aisle today.

Bells

Ringing St. Mary of the Assumption

Originally, three bells were built into the tower by the Claren company from Sieglar. However, these were melted down after the Second World War and replaced in 1956 by four bronze bells from the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock, Gescher. The disposition is the so-called extended Gloria motif (in the bell book "Christ ist erstieg") with the nominal striking tones e¹-9 (Marien bell, 1250 kg), f sharp¹-9 (Michael bell, 880 kg), a¹-9 (Joseph bell, 470 kg) and h¹-8 (Gerarde bell, 330 kg).
